Tote Bag Design Goals

Robust

Built to be used. Will it protect what is inside of it? Will items stay inside when in use?

Clean finishes

No raw edges, no serged seams - the inside should have “pretty-guts”. No gaps at the ends of the zipper panel.

Right-Sized

“Lagom stor” is a term in Swedish that essentially means “just right”. So, can it hold the everyday-carry essentials with ease?

Bag Construction

Final Design Details

Weight Distribution System

The pockets are constructed separate from the body of the bag as a part of the webbing carrying strap system. The weight of any items in the bag is distributed directly into the bag shoulder straps when being carried. This helps reduce deformation in the boxed exterior shaping of the bag. It also minimizes localized stress on weaker fabric areas of the tote.

Materials & Supplies

Fabric: black & olive deadstock remnant dry-waxed cotton sourced by & purchased from Arkdefo

Padding: secondhand polyester batting from Ragfinery

Notions: Gutermann thread, YKK zipper, Fidlock fastener, grosgrain, webbing & bungee

Day to Day Ease of Use

Completed in April of 2023 and has since been used as my daily work/life bag and as my personal item on two flights!

  • Fidlock bungee fastener secures the gaping-prone notebook & iPad pocket from obstructing the main bag compartment

  • Padding provided by the polyester batting has kept items safe & secure from the outside world & each other
